# Who should fix or finish your app: a studio, a freelancer, or a marketplace like _Toptal or Upwork?_

If the job is one small task you can check, hire a freelancer or use a marketplace. If the app is live, broken in ways nobody has mapped, and you need someone accountable for the result, a studio with a fixed quote is the safer choice. A curated network fits best when you already have a technical lead to direct the person.

Toptal quotes are from toptal.com, read on October 17, 2026. The open-marketplace column describes the model in general, not any platform's specific terms. USD figures are approximate, at ₹95 = $1.

## Cost: what you pay for, not just the rate

A freelancer or a marketplace hire is usually the cheapest per hour. A studio usually costs more per hour but quotes a fixed price for an outcome. The real question is who carries the risk when the work takes longer than planned.

With hourly work, you carry it. With a fixed quote, the studio does, for the agreed scope. For a broken AI-built app, where nobody knows how deep the problems go until someone reads the code, that difference matters more than the rate.

For reference, Hunchbite's security and hardening for an AI-built app is ₹2L–₹5L (approx. $2,100–$5,300) over about a week, and a takeover of a live app is ₹2L–₹6L (approx. $2,100–$6,300) over one to two weeks. Both are quoted after a free audit.

## Vetting: who checks the engineer

With a freelancer or an open marketplace, you do the vetting. That is fine if you can read code or have a technical friend who can. It is hard if you are a non-technical founder with an app that an AI tool wrote.

A curated network does some of the vetting for you. Toptal describes itself as “an exclusive network of the top freelance” engineers and other experts, and says applicants are tested before they join. You still direct the person once they start.

A studio is vetted as a company. Ask for work it has shipped, talk to a past client, and read the contract.

## Continuity: what happens when someone leaves

This is a common way for a fix to go wrong. One person holds the context, then gets a full-time job, falls ill or stops replying. Your project waits while you find someone new, and that person has to learn the code from scratch.

A studio does not remove this risk, but it moves it. If one engineer leaves, the company still owes you the work. Ask how the studio documents what it changes.

## Code ownership: make it explicit

In every model, the contract decides who owns the code. Put three things in writing: the repository is in your account, the IP is assigned to you, and you hold the logins for hosting, database and domain.

With Hunchbite, you own 100% of the code, docs and deployment access. You can also hire the same engineers in-house later, so there is no handover gap.

## Accountability: who is on the hook for the result

With a freelancer or a marketplace hire, you manage the work and own the result. That suits a founder who knows what “done” looks like.

With a studio, the studio owns the result for the agreed scope. That suits a founder who knows the outcome they need (“safe to put real users on”) but not the steps.

## The honest verdict, by situation

### One bug, one broken deploy, or a feature that needs a small change

A freelancer or a marketplace hire. The task is small and easy to check. A studio engagement is too much process for it.

### Your AI-built app is live, has users, and may be leaking data

A studio or a specialist that starts with an audit and a fixed quote. You need someone accountable for the whole fix, not one task.

### You have a technical co-founder or CTO who needs more hands

A curated network or a strong freelancer. Your CTO does the directing; you need capacity, not management.

### Your developer disappeared and nobody knows the code

A studio. Someone has to read the code, decide what to keep, and own the plan. That is a takeover, not a task.

### You plan to hire your own team within a year

A studio that lets you hire its engineers, or a freelancer you could hire full-time later. Avoid setups where the people who know the code cannot join you.

## When Hunchbite is the wrong choice

* Your fix is one small, well-defined task. A freelancer will be cheaper and just as good.
* You want an engineer you direct hour by hour inside your own team. A curated network or a direct hire fits that better.
* Your app is built in a stack outside ours. We work in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js and PostgreSQL (including Supabase). For native iOS or Android, PHP or .NET, find a specialist.
* Your budget is well below our lowest published range of ₹2L (approx. $2,100). A fixed-price rescue service or a freelancer is a better fit.
* You need a large team on day one. We are a team of 2–10 people.

When we are the right fit: you have an AI-built or stalled app that must go to production, and you want one team accountable for it. Frequently Asked

### Is a freelancer cheaper than a studio for fixing an app?

Per hour, usually yes. Per finished result, not always. With hourly work you pay for every unknown the freelancer finds in the code. A studio's fixed quote moves that risk to the studio for the agreed scope. Hunchbite's hardening work for an AI-built app is ₹2L–₹5L (approx. $2,100–$5,300), quoted after a free audit.

### Are Toptal and Upwork the same thing?

No. Toptal describes itself as an exclusive network and says it vets applicants before they join. Upwork works as an open marketplace, where you choose the person yourself. In both cases, you direct the person you hire.

### Who owns the code if I hire through a marketplace?

Your contract and the platform's terms decide. Read both before work starts. Whatever model you choose, make sure the repository, hosting and database accounts are in your name and the IP is assigned to you in writing.

### What if the person fixing my app disappears halfway?

With a freelancer or a marketplace hire, you find and onboard someone new, who starts by learning the code. With a studio, the company still owes you the work. Either way, insist that all code lives in your repository from day one, so nothing is lost.

### Can I work with an Indian studio from the US or Europe?

Yes. Hunchbite overlaps with your time zone for calls and sends async updates in between. You get a fixed quote before work starts.

### What if my app cannot be fixed?

Then you need a rebuild decision, not a fixer. Get a written audit that says what to keep and what to replace before you hire anyone for the work.
